News that Debruit was combining with vocalist Alsarah on a full length LP arose back in September, and you can now hear a second track from the project.

Inspired by a section of traditional songs sung by Sudanese women entitled Aghani Albanat, the track is more sedate than 'lead single' 'Aljawal'. The vocals are instantly recognizable from the 'original' rendition, however it is again the tasteful way in which tradition is met with modern production that really makes this special.

You can check out both tracks below (both the original snippet - specifically entitled 'Habibi Safr Mini' - as well as the official video for 'Jibal Alnuba'). The album is released next week, and you can pre-order your copy via this link on the Soundway site.

It goes without saying that House music in South Africa is a big deal. It has featured on these very pages a few times - Drew Cool's Mzansi Unearthed series being perhaps the most comprehensive example, and the forthcoming Awesome Tapes from Africa release is a highly anticipated re-issue of Penny Penny's 'Shaka Bundu' LP.

The latest exponent of the countries fascination with all things house are Little Dragon. As well as working on some new material, they have found the time to put together this selection of kwaito, SA house, and 90's jams. There is a track list below, but that might not mean much to most people. The best thing to do is press play, and enjoy this interpretation of a hugely underrated scene.
Mop Mop's previous appearance on these pages was when the French Fried boogie edit was doing the rounds. This time it's a version of the François Lougah track 'Bravo Sotra' taken from the Ivory Coast Soul 2 compilation that warrants a mention.

Aside from the increased tempo and additional percussion, the re-working is fairly subtle. Not that there is much wrong with that - the track has now been brought in from the cold to warm by the side of the dancefloor, and will be glad for the change of scenery.

Uploaded to Soundcloud, there is only the low res stream to go by for now. News of a release and distribution details are no doubt imminent, but for now you will have to make do with warding off the winter weather with the link below.
What goes around, comes around. In classic full circle fashion the very source that inspired a recent flurry of Middle Eastern activity on this site is back, providing a fitting conclusion to a period of investigation several weeks after it was first recorded.

More specifically the Fortuna Records Boiler Room session that took place at the end of August is finally available to hear again. The team behind the 'Grazia Peretz' reissue and Brownswood mix (to name just two examples) were invited to deepest E8 whilst in town and laid down a selection formidable enough to educate any mind that was willing to learn.

Standout tracks for us (for now, at least) include a piece of Israeli Jazz by Albert Piamenta from the LP 'Jazz Work Shop' (a snippet of which you can hear in the first minute of this video). Alternatively you could check this slice of raw Turkish funk by Nese Karaböcek entitled 'Yali Yali'.

The expansive nature of the mix can't really be done justice here - you'll just have to press play on the link below. Some tracks may not be to your taste, but there's no doubt that everyone with a remote interest in what was played will take at least a handful of positives from the 2 hour session.

The wait is over. After a fair amount of anticipation and speculation, the Four Tet produced Omar Souleyman album is set for release later this month. Available in all formats (Vinyl, CD, MP3 and Tape) you can pre-order the LP via the Ribbon website right now (if you do, there's a poster in it for you as well).

Whilst it might be common knowledge that Omar Souleyman handed over production duties for the album to Kieran Hebden, this is also technically his first studio album. Following on from several compilations and live recordings, 'Wenu Wenu' will mark the Syrians first real spell in any kind of recording space.

Check out the album opener and lead single below. An amalgamation of the middle eastern sounds we are used to hearing from the former wedding entertainer and the modern production methods of Hebden, this is one release not to be missed.
The Awesome Tapes from Africa label has been releasing some incredible material since its inception, and some of the best responses were reserved for the re-issue of a Hailu Mergia LP earlier this year. As eclectic as ever, the record was packed full of soothing Ethiopian folk music with a nod to the 21st century.

It's perhaps this amalgamation of era's contained within the original release that has led to news of a remix EP. Announced for an immediate release this week, a handful of Hailu Mergia's tracks have been tweaked, massaged and persuaded into new forms by artists such as Prins Thomas, El Guincho, and Protect-U.

You can check out the Prins Thomas 'Diskomiks' below, which somewhat fittingly combines the swooning nature of Hailu Mergia's playing style with his lethargic take on Scandinavian 'Space Disco'. Once that has tempted you into getting hold of the full release, you can pre-order it via Boomkat here.
Brownswood have announced another release inspired by last years 'Mala in Cuba' LP, and this time it's the turn of Theo Parrish to provide. Taking on the blissful 'Como Como', Parrish has evolved the track into an organic 8 minute journey. Stylistically the remix stays fairly true to the original but with a vibe inspired by the age old late night mixtape. Structurally elongated, each element has been given the chance to breathe, and as a result the bottom end frequencies are allowed to further develop.

Out on 14th October on a limited edition 10" with baby blue sleeve, you can pre-order your copies via the usual outlets right now (see the Brownswood soundcloud page for more info). If you were a fan of the 'Grazia!' LP on Fortuna Records last month then this selection will be right up your street. When the guys behind the label were in town they stopped by a couple of staple institutions to play some tunes, and the mix that Zack put together for Gilles Peterson's Brownswood label is now available to listen to.

If you head over to the Worldwide blog you can either listen there, download directly here, or if you aren't already - sign up to the podcast series in full. There's a broad range of styles on offer in this selection from all corners of the middle east. Essential listening and hugely inspirational. Track list below.
Tigers Milk is a brand new label focusing solely on Peruvian music that has been in the pipeline for some time. After first hearing about the project last year it's good to get some concrete news on their first release. It's only now we know that November will see the 'Peru Maravilloso' compilation land, focusing on rare cumbia, guaracha and electronic chicha from 60's and 70's Peru.

The latest offering from the forthcoming compilation is Lucho Neves 'Mambo De Machaguay'. Initially a seemingly run of the mill mambo/salsa track, the magic of the leading piano line becomes more and more apparent (and completely addictive) after each listen.

According to the press release, 'All of the tracks included have been specially re-mastered from their original 7” and 12” formats and have never been released since their original press in Peru'. Whilst this could be an attribute applied to any compilation of traditional music, on this occasion it adds further weight to the fact that this is the first of its kind to focus on this location and period.

You can also check out Juaneco y su Combo's 'La Cumbia Del Pacurro' below. Without being quite as quaint as 'Mambo De Machaguay', it's far more rugged and provoacative in it's style and gives some idea of the range of genres on offer.

Needless to say Tigers Milk are a welcome addition to the scene. You can check out their Facebook and Soundcloud pages here, and pre-order the LP via Bandcamp.
Chances are this won't be the first you have heard of the upcoming 'Red Hot Fela' album, but due to recent developments it's only right the release gets a mention. Red Hot are a charity dedicated to fighting Aids using cultural means, and following on from their previous 'Red Hot + Rio' releases the collection of all star Fela Kuti covers is due out in October on Knitting Factory Records.

Up until now the only track available to check has been Baloji's version of 'Buy Africa', but over the weekend a wonderful cover of 'Sorrow, Tears and Blood' appeared online. Featuring the mighty Kyp Malone and Tunde Adebimpe (TV on the Radio) backed by the Kronos Quartet and Stuart Bogie (Antibalas), you can hear a radio rip of the track below.

It is very easy - particularly in this day and age - to capitalise on the talents of people like Fela Kuti. It is also commonplace for people to begin and end their interests in African music with Afrobeat alone. However the combination of artists involved and technical merits in the tracks doing the rounds (especially this latest offering) hopefully put this release in a much better stead.
Without a hint of a warning, Soundway have released a preview of the forthcoming collaboration between Débruit & Alsarah. After an apparently lengthy collaboration between the Sudanese-born singer and the French producer the resulting LP is due for release in November.

Alsarah's story is an interesting one - you can get more info on the release via the label's website - and her collaboration with Débruit is eclectic and exciting in equal measures. 'Alkoan Baladi' is the only track available right now, and although judging the LP from this alone would be foolish, the project is certainly more a carefully constructed collaboration rather than some sort of novelty mash-up. The footwork inspired styles associated with Débruit are lurking in the background, but the magic in this first offering is definitely down to the haunting vocal style that has been so delicately incorporated and built upon.

You can pre-order the album from the Soundway web store right now, and be sure to hear more about the project between now and the release date towards the end of the year.
Awesome Tapes from Africa have a real treat in store for the next re-issue on thei in-house label (excuse the pun), and it's due for a November release. Originally known (by his real name) as Eric Kobane, 'Penny Penny' was apparently one of 68 children from a family with 17 wives who went on to be a South African House legend. You can read more about him either in this fantastic introduction to the release by Fact magazine, or over at the '27 Leggies' Tsonga Disco blog.

Originally released in 1994, 'Shaka Bundu' originally featured on the Awesome Tapes site back in 2010. An unashamedly poppy album, the LP cruises along at a slightly slower pace than most Westerners might traditionally consider house, but it also doesn't give a damn.

Check out the opening track from the album 'Shichangani' below, and if you have any sense whatsoever you will start saving your pennies in the build up to the 12th of Novemer.

*UPDATE*

You can now hear another track from the forthcoming LP. Entitled 'Dance Khomela', it's bringing a much higher tempo than 'Shichangani' whilst ensuring the excessive positivity associated with 90's house music remains.
Much has been written about Sons of Kemet throughout the lengthy build up to the release of their debut LP this week. Technically what you might call a 'supergroup', the band consists of 2 drummers, a Tuba player, and a front man who is master of all things reed-based. Each of the individual members is an extremely accomplished musician in their own right, however it might not be too presumptuous to state that none of them have ever been involved in anything quite like 'Sons of Kemet'.

I could go into the intricacies of the percussion arrangements, the range of influences, or even the novelty of the brass bassline. However seeing as the album is now readily available, doing so would seem futile. If you haven't heard it, lead single 'Inner Babylon' is probably as good a place to start as any. The video is below. There's also a sample of the full LP in case you aren't immediately convinced to part with your hard earned.

You can also watch their incredible gig from Dalston's Vortex Jazz Bar in celebration of the album launch from last week over at the venue's website. The footage is impeccable and the sound quality is spot on, but there is no mention of how long it will be up so don't hang around.

If this is the first you have heard of Sons of Kemet, rest assured it probably won't be the last.
Following on from his incredible 'Harpoon Land' remix, Tom is now plotting his return to creating original productions by announcing the Revolutions release (I'm as yet unsure whether to refer to it as an EP or LP).

The initial offering - and opening track - comes in the form of the moody, melancholy 'Revolutions Part 1'. Taking its percussive influences from all over the place, the fluttering horn section that is introduced in the second half only adds to the mysterious and almost tribal feel.

With its release coming last week this one slipped under the radar, but we're choosing to take the 'better late than never' approach. Officially released on 24th August via Born Bad, 'Francis Bebey Remixed' is an EP of edits and re-workings from the likes of Daphni, Pilooski, and more. With only 150 12"s pressed it's sold out for now, but there's nothing to stop you enjoying the soundcloud links and keeping your eyes peeled for any spares when they appear.

Following on from their release of Bebey's 'African Electronic Music' LP last year, this EP is a refreshing take on some of his other tracks with a view to them being dropped on a more discerning dance floor. Personal highlights include the 'Pilooski' edit, as well as 'Young Marco's' 'Coffee Cola' version. There are a few of the tracks below for you to make up your own mind, however.
The first full album release on Israel's 'Fortuna Records' is set to arrive this week in the form of a Turkish 'Disco-Psych' re-issue. Grazia Peretz's 'Grazia!' was originally released in the 70's, and by all accounts wasn't received as well as it should have been by the folk obsessed audience at the time.

Fast forward more than 30 years and the diverse, forward thinking nature of the LP has been once again realised by the guys at Fortuna. You can find much more information about how and why the original album was recorded, as well as who was involved over at the 'Light in the Attic' blog. However if you want a copy yourself, be quick, there are only 1000 of these gatefold vinyl's set to be pressed.

For now there is an album sampler embedded below, and even by listening to these snippets alone it's very easy to imagine how radical this release must have seemed. The combination of American/western funk and disco influences are plain to hear, and combined with the youthful power in Grazia's voice they make for an incredibly exciting re-issue indeed. Grab yours while you can.
In case you missed this last week, there is a new mix on the Sofrito site. The first one in a while, it's a fairly atypical selection for them - particularly considering it's been put together by Hugo himself. Whilst anything usually associated with Sofrito tends to lean towards the Latin end of the spectrum, it's quite amazing how the Dominican based selection has its roots firmly in the sounds more typically associated with West African funk and boogie.

For what it's worth there's a track list below, but I doubt that will do many people any good such are the digging abilities of Hugo Mendez and co. What will do you some good however, is pressing play and doing your best to recover from the long weekend. Or you can download it here and check it out at your leisure.
News of Soundway's latest project has surfaced, and it's a (limited press vinyl only) re-issue of 'Easy Kabaka Brown's' 'Opotopo' LP. Originally released in 1976, Soundway are bringing it back from the hypothetical 'dead' with a re-press of just 1000 copies.

The more observant among you will notice that the initial preview track 'Belema' has been heard before on the label's first of two 'Modern Highlife' compilations. If that is the case, you might even share the opinion that the track is a near perfect slice of highlife. 'Easy's' almost talkative flow sits on top of the male backing vocals seamlessly, all of which is laid sporadically over some of the most reassuringly positive chord structure and lead guitar lines.

If the press release's promise that the rest of the LP is as essential as this oh so familiar hit is true, then this really will be a release to watch our for.

The first Afrobeat Airways compilation was a big moment for this site. Not only did it contain (the subseqently Daphni-edited) 'Cos-Ber-Zam', but 'Afe Ato Yen Bio' is still a personal favourite around these parts even after this long.

4 years down the line, Analog Africa are readying the follow-up for a September release, and as of yesterday you can check out three tracks on their Soundcloud page.

The first is a guitar led funk excursion by what can only be the very same 'De Frank' (of 'Professionals' fame) mentioned in the opening paragraph. 'Say Min Sy Soh' is a much more eclectic arrangement, with the horns, keys and highlife guitar lines playing off against each other with regular exchanges. It is the Uppers International track, however, that brings the biggest smiles. From the same guys that were responsible for 'Dankasa' on the first compilation, 'Aja Wondo' is a much more vocal inspired journey, led by a deep meandering bassline fit to burst.

The list of artists included in the compilation is beyond belief, and the physical release is set to include a fair few treats. Keep your ears peeled for more snippets and the eventual full release. Big things go on.

News of a highly anticipated William Onyeabor compilation has been bubbling away in the background for a while now, and a slice of the full length release on Luaka Bop is with us available to check out. 'Good Name' is fairly typical of the meandering, digitized funk driven style that is associated with Onyeabor.

One element that resonates are the English vocals - a fairly rare feature in most current African re-issues. Being able to relate to the (suddenly slightly antiquated) lyrics is somewhat of a curveball, but these are ten heavy minutes that you will want to enjoy over and over again.

Most original presses of Onyeabor's albums go for big bucks online, so the eventual release of the compilation is good news for the mere mortals among us. 'Who is William Onyeabor' is set for release on 15th October. You can also download the track via the labels site for nothing here.

Incidentally 'Zombie' was the track that turned me on to Fela Kuti some years a go, which in hindsight was no doubt a significant factor in my foray into African music as a whole. Therefore there was a certain amount of trepidation when I came across this version. However done in a typically tasteful and imaginative manner (at least going by what we have heard from Pedestrian so far), the version is as subtle and respectful as can be.
There are many elements of this album which will no doubt educate the western listener, however to place the accent on the unfamiliar nature would be doing an injustice to the quality of the playing on display. To put it simply, 'Call of Bangalore' is almost entirely focused around the violin playing of practising pathologist Dr Jyotsna Srikanth.

The term Carnatic music is apparently one the album conforms to, or at least is inspired by. Accompanied by just simple, traditional percussion, the 6 track LP (it is perhaps only entitled to be referred to as such because of the 40 minute marathon 'Brovabarama') is as intriguing as it is skilled.

You can find much more information about Jyotsna quite easily, but if this is the first time you have come across her name, just click play on the link below. Whilst this may not be one for the faint hearted, album opener 'Varnam' is a concise summary of the incredible abilities and adventurous nature at the heart of the album.

Tom Skinner (AKA Hello Skinny) is perhaps positioned better than most to put together a remix of any Owiny Sigoma Band track, mainly due to the fact that he's the bands drummer. Not only that this is an extremely accomplished musician with many fingers in a variety of pies, including his own LP which was released last year.

This remix of Harpoon Land is a sparse, progressive take on the original which evolves slowly throughout its duration. With the focus being very much on the bassline an it's meandering style, the vocals are stripped back to let the instrumentation speak for itself. As with the original, the African influences brought to the project by the members involved in the collaboration takes a step back. However there is still a fairly unorthodox element to the structure which is no bad thing - quite the opposite in fact.

Check out the track below, and if you haven't got either Owiny Sigoma LP, pull yourself together.
Simo Lagnawi is an artist who I have only come across recently, but is one that has seemingly established himself as the primary exponent of Gnawa music in the UK (and particularly - as the album title suggests - in London). April this year saw the release of the aforementioned debut LP 'Gnawa London' on Waulk Records, and whilst the album doesn't claim to be anything but a showcase of 'genuine' Gnawa music it warrants a listen purely on the basis that it is both technically impressive and also hugely emotive.

The honesty and authenticity behind the playing is no doubt due to the fact that he arrived in the UK from Morocco just over 5 years a go. Since then he has performed with an array of acts from all over the world, with perhaps the most notable collaboration being the 'Electric Jabala' project in collaboration with Tumbleweave favourites Soundspecies.

Keep your eyes peeled for live dates from Simo in all his guises, but for now you can either check out album track 'Shabala' here or have a look at the Electric Jabala video with Soundspecies below.
